I once believed I could be a professional soccer player breaking all of Mia Hamm’s records. Some years later, I believed I could co-own a restaurant with a long-distance friend of mine. That is, until I turned 16. The stark cruelty of the world entered my realizations that not all is easily solvable or attainable. A cocktail mixture of my mother’s constant back rubs, competing in countless sports, and bringing pen to paper kept me moving along. But it was the pen and paper part that introduced me to a dream that I’ve been chasing the longest.
Today, I can tell you that this dream is coming true. A publishing imprint, Zeitgeist, of Penguin Random House reached out to me last winter, gave me a chance, and had me write a book!
Learn to Sign with Your Baby is out November 8, 2022. This book provides 50 essential signs in American Sign Language to help your child communicate their needs, wants, and feelings. It is available for preorder here.
You may already be thinking, “There’s already several books out there that do this exact thing.” So, right now, I’m going to imagine I’m in a job interview. You, my imaginary potential employer, asks me, “What can you bring to the table that is different than everyone else?” My answer would be, “This is the first signing book for babies to be put together by a Deaf writer, a Deaf illustrator, and Deaf signer! And if I may I add, this book includes a QR Code that archives videos of the Deaf signer, an ASL instructor, signing each and every one of the words taught in this book. With Deaf experts in their respective fields, you’re guaranteed a book of sign language for babies that is precise, accurate, and true to the Deaf community, culture, and language. This book is as authentic as it gets when you wish to learn to use sign language with a special baby in your life.”
How’s that for an answer? You can read more about it and preorder it from your favorite retailer here. If you choose to preorder now, that means a great deal! Preorders often determine the reach and success of a book.
Finally, if this book isn’t applicable to you, that’s okay! Instead, you could consider gifting this book to someone else who has a baby, is expecting, or works/cares for a baby(ies).
Thank you for supporting dreams to come true. Third time’s a charm!
Have at it.
